Description Syracuse Regional Airport Authority (SRAA), operator of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, is seeking part‑time Airport Police Officers for the police force at Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Responsibilities, under the supervision of the Airport Police Captain, include enforcing federal and state laws and local ordinances, maintaining order, and conducting community policing and routine patrol duties on an assigned shift. We are seeking individuals who are community‑service oriented. Part‑time Shift Schedule Candidates must be able to work a regular, recurring schedule of 16–24 hours per week, not to exceed 29 hours per week on average. Shifts: A Watch – 12 am–8 am B Watch – 8 am–4 pm C Watch – 4 pm–12 am Salary and Benefits $40.00 per hour, plus shift differential New York State Police and Fire Retirement System (PFRS) Plan 384d NYS Deferred Compensation Plan (457b/Roth) Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Paid leave to volunteer for community service Training and professional development opportunities Statutory benefits required by NYS, including short‑term disability and workers compensation Typical Work Activities Patrol assigned areas on foot or in vehicle, including curb management. Respond to all aircraft emergency situations. Direct traffic in congested and emergency areas. Issue traffic and other citations or warnings. Perform investigatory work, search for and preserve evidence. Check doors and windows of unoccupied business and leased properties. Investigate suspicious activities and make arrests under federal and state laws and local ordinances. Escort arrested individuals to jail and court; book them on charges. Investigate wanted and missing persons, stolen cars and property. Maintain order in crowds at gatherings on airport grounds. Answer questions, direct the traveling public and airport visitors. Receive complaints from the public. Use radio technology for communication with airport personnel and other law enforcement and emergency management agencies. Make daily reports of activities. Requirements Knowledge of accepted principles and practices of law enforcement as applied to airport and aviation security. Knowledge of New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law and other relevant state and local laws. Knowledge of FAA and TSA policies, including 49 CFR Part 1542 and related security practices. Knowledge of 14 CFR Part 139 – Certification of Airports. Knowledge of modern methods and techniques employed in airport safety and security. Proficiency in personal computer use, Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency in radio communications technology. Effective communication skills, both oral and written in English; bilingual is a plus. Ability to maintain positive professional relationships with a diverse staff and agencies. Good judgment and effective decision making aligned with mission and values. Ability to work independently or as a team in high‑stress and life‑threatening situations. Follow commands without hesitation, especially in emergencies. Maintain records, prepare reports in organized and clear manner. Use and care of firearms. Work primarily in indoor office setting and occasionally outdoors on foot or in vehicle in all weather conditions. Perform lifesaving procedures. Physical strength and agility sufficient for police work. Meet physical, mental, and certification requirements of New York State statutes for law enforcement. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a valid New York State Basic Police Officer Certificate (BPOC). 3 years of police or peace officer experience, or equivalent part‑time experience, meeting requirements in 1542.217. Education High school graduate or holder of a high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department. Citizenship Candidates must be citizens of the United States at time of appointment. License Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment. Physical Candidates must meet prescribed general physical and medical conditions stated by Municipal Police Training Council standards. Physical requirements are removed for provisional candidates with former law enforcement experience and a valid basic police officer certificate, though a standard pre‑employment physical is still required. Psychological Psychiatric and polygraph examinations may be required of any successful candidate prior to appointment. Moral Character Good moral character with no felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions may bar appointment. For Retired Police Officers Must have a basic police officer certificate and be licensed to carry a firearm and have arrest authority. Note Police officer positions at the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority were established under Public Authorities Law section 2799‑ggg‑1. All appointments are subject to Municipal Police Training Council regulations. Special Requirements Must obtain and maintain security clearance as required by role and TSA regulations. Subject to Syracuse Regional Airport Authority drug and testing policy for safety‑sensitive positions. Other Requirements Must pass security clearance background check, pre‑employment drug test, and physical. Must obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge. Position is provisional with Civil Service; a competitive examination may be required for permanent appointment. SRAA will support 211‑waiver application; approval at discretion of New York State Commission on Civil Service.
