Orientation and Mobility Specialist Location: Berkeley Preparatory Academy • Berkeley Charter Education Association Base pay range: $60,167.00/yr - $70,340.00/yr Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt Reports To: SPED Coordinator Position Overview The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist supports students with visual impairments by developing and implementing individualized orientation and mobility programs to increase their independence and access to the school environment. Working in collaboration with educators, families, and specialized service providers, the O&M Specialist ensures students can safely and confidently navigate their surroundings, both within school campuses and in the broader community. This position plays a critical role in helping visually impaired students meet educational goals, participate fully in the school day, and develop the foundational skills necessary for lifelong independence. Key Responsibilities Assess students’ orientation and mobility skills using formal and informal assessments to determine strengths, challenges, and appropriate interventions. Develop and implement individualized Orientation and Mobility plans as part of IEPs or 504 Plans, in compliance with IDEA and state regulations. Provide direct instruction in travel skills, including cane techniques, spatial awareness, auditory localization, indoor navigation, public transportation use, and street crossings. Collaborate with special education teams, teachers, related service providers, and families to integrate mobility goals across educational settings. Conduct environmental assessments of school campuses to identify barriers and ensure accessibility and safety for students with visual impairments. Participate in IEP meetings, providing expert recommendations and updates on student progress. Train staff and caregivers in best practices for supporting student mobility and independence. Assist with the transition planning process, especially for students preparing for high school, college, or community-based instruction. Maintain accurate records, session logs, and data on student progress and service delivery. Adhere to all applicable federal, state, and district regulations related to the provision of orientation and mobility services. Stay current with trends, tools, and research in the field of visual impairments and mobility training. Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, or a related field. Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) credential from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP) required. Minimum of 2 years of experience providing O&M services in educational settings, preferably in charter or public schools. Strong understanding of visual impairments and their impact on educational access and mobility. Familiarity with IDEA, ADA, and Section 504 as they relate to services for students with visual impairments. Experience working with diverse student populations, including students with multiple disabilities. Proficiency in data collection, report writing, and developing individualized instructional plans. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively; sit, stand, walk, and use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and instructional materials. Noise level is typically moderate, but can be higher during student-centered activities or events. Occasional local travel for school-related functions may be required.
