Position Title: Exceptional Student Education Orientation and Mobility Specialist Location: Office of Schools Reports to: Exceptional Student Education VI Supervisor Bargaining Unit: DFT Benefits Eligible: Yes Telecommuting Eligible: School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting Position Summary: The certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist will provide Orientation and Mobility Services to students identified with a visual impairment in Detroit Public Schools Community District and its catchment areas. Services will be provided in accordance with state and national Orientation and Mobility standards, curriculum, and evidence-based practices. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist will provide instruction to students with visual impairments in the use of their remaining senses to learn independent life skill concepts, determine their position within the environment, and in techniques for safe travel within school and outdoor environments, including residential, small business, large business and bus and alternative public transportation options. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited college or university. Certified or certifiable by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP). Must have an exemplary attendance record. Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations. Essential Functions: Evaluate, plan, coordinate, and implement individualized programs of instruction in all areas of orientation and mobility for students with visual impairments ages birth to 26, including students with multiple disabilities. Participate in MET and IEP meetings, and write observable, measurable goals leading toward progress toward specific outcomes. Provide instruction of sequential and appropriate orientation and mobility skills including, but are not limited to: concept development, sensory development skills, low vision skills including the use of low vision aids, and/or cane techniques as necessary to ensure travel safety in all the above listed environments. Actively participate in consultation and collaboration with members of the student’s IEP team. Complete all required documentation accurately and within all required or imposed timelines including Medicaid billing, IEP development, and progress reporting. Remain current in practices related to orientation and mobility, medical aspects of vision loss, devices and technology for students with a visual impairment. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.
