POSITION TITLE: COURT REPORTER

KIND OF WORK

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to maintain a complete and accurate record of all the Court's proceedings. Employees in this classification perform professional, skilled level work. Position is responsible for making verbatim records and producing certified written transcripts. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

This class differs from the Court Recorder, in that the Court Reporter must be certified to make verbatim records. This class differs from the Chief Court Reporter in that the latter has supervisory responsibilities and decision-making authority.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Records the testimony of all witnesses, evidence introduced or offered, objections thereto, and the rulings of the Court thereon.

Prepares, proofs, edits, and certifies verbatim transcripts within time allowed by law.

Test and prepare all audio recording equipment in the court room.

Monitor and setup equipment during court proceedings.

Provide transcriptions to clerks, lawyers, judges and other court officials in a timely manner.

Review transcripts for accuracy and clarity.

Prepares estimates of transcript costs for attorneys or litigants.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Relief for Assistant Judicial Administrator to answer telephones.

Performs related work as required.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE. SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of legal terminology for State, Parish, medical, and numerous other technical languages.

Skill in typing and basic transcription.

Skill in the operation of a computer and/or transcription and Stenographic system.

Ability to understand simple oral and written instructions.

 

Ability to organize and store shorthand notes, transcript files and related information securely.

 

Ability to utilize a wide variety of data and information, such as a docket ledger, transcripts, and court information management systems.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and fellow employees, as well as other agencies such as the Clerk of Court, District Attorney and Jefferson Parish Sheriff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma; Court Reporter Certification from the State of Louisiana (5) years of active experience in the field; (1) year of Stenographic and various English and medical courses; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Louisiana Board of Examiners Court Reporter Certification required or National Court Reporter Reciprocity by the State of Louisiana.

Six (6) hours per year of continuing education required
